PDFOwl

Questions and answers

What PDFOwl does, where your files go, and how plans and refunds work.

Getting started

What is PDFOwl?

An online PDF editor that runs in your browser. You can change the text in a PDF, sign it, fill in forms, merge and split files, compress, redact, add a password and more. There is nothing to install.

Do I need an account?

Not to try it. You can open a PDF and use every tool without an account. You need an account and a plan to download your edited PDF or save it to the cloud.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. It works in the browser on iPhone, iPad and Android, as well as on Mac, Windows and Chromebook. On a phone or tablet you can also photograph paper with the camera and turn it into a PDF.

Where can I open files from?

From your device, from Dropbox and from Google Drive. On iPhone, iPad and Mac the file chooser also reaches iCloud Drive, and on phones and tablets you can scan a page with the camera.

Which kinds of file can I open?

PDF files, and JPG, PNG and WebP pictures. A picture becomes a page, and several files chosen together are joined into one PDF.

Editing

Can I change the text that is already in a PDF?

Yes. Click a line of text to change it, or drag it to move it. Text you type can use Latin, Cyrillic and Greek letters.

How to edit a PDF

Can I edit a scanned document?

A scanned page is a picture, so its text can't be clicked straight away. Choose Recognize text (OCR) under Document tools first; after that you can click a line to change it. It works best on clean, printed text in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Romanian. Handwriting and poor scans give poor results.

How OCR works

How do I sign a PDF?

Draw your signature, type it, or upload a picture of it, then place it on the page. It can be remembered in your browser for next time. This puts an image of your signature on the document; it is not a certificate-based digital signature.

Can I fill in a PDF form, or make my own?

Both. Open a form and type into its boxes or tick them. To make a form of your own, add text fields and checkboxes to any PDF; whoever opens the downloaded file can then fill them in. Dropdown lists and signature fields can't be added yet.

What is the difference between Whiteout, Redact and Crop?

Whiteout and Crop only hide what they cover; it is still inside the file. Redact removes it for good by rebuilding that page as a picture, so use Redact for anything that must not be recoverable, and check the downloaded file before you share it.

How to redact a PDF

Can I convert a PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint?

No. PDFOwl can turn pictures into a PDF and save PDF pages as JPG or PNG pictures, but it does not convert PDFs into Office documents.

Can I open a PDF that has a password, or add one?

Yes to both. Open a protected PDF and type its password when asked; the password is used on your device and is not sent anywhere. You can also download any PDF with a password of your own. Keep it safe: if it is lost, nobody can recover the file.

How to add a password

Will I lose my work if I close the tab?

No. Your document and your edits are kept in your browser as you go, and your recent files are listed on the home page of that browser. On a shared computer, remove them from that list when you have finished.

Privacy and your files

Are my files uploaded to PDFOwl?

No. A PDF you open is read, edited and exported inside your browser. It is only sent to us if you press Save to cloud. Files you pick from Dropbox or Google Drive come straight from there into your browser.

What does Save to cloud do?

It stores that PDF and your edits in your account, so you can open them on another device. It needs a plan, a single document can be up to 25 MB, and you can delete anything you have saved at any time.

Do you use cookies or track me?

There are no advertising or tracking cookies and no outside analytics. Our hosting sets one short-lived security cookie that tells real visitors from automated ones. We keep plain totals of how the site is used, such as how many visits a page had, which are not linked to you.

How do I delete my documents or my account?

Both are on your documents page. You can delete any saved document whether or not you have a plan. Deleting your account removes everything saved to it for good; a running subscription has to be canceled first.

Plans and payment

What does PDFOwl cost?

Opening and editing a PDF costs nothing. Downloading or saving needs a plan: Monthly at $5.99 per month, Yearly at $49 per year (which works out to $4.08 a month), or a 7-day pass at $3.99 one time.

Compare the plans

What is the difference between the 7-day pass and a subscription?

The pass is a single payment for seven days of access and never renews. Monthly and Yearly renew automatically until you cancel. If you subscribe while a pass still has more than two days to run, billing for the subscription starts when the pass ends.

How do I cancel?

From Plan and billing in your account menu, at any time, without contacting us. You keep your access until the end of the period you have paid for and are not charged again.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. Write to support@pdfowl.net within 7 days of a payment and we refund it in full. That covers a first payment, a renewal and the 7-day pass. A refund ends the access that payment paid for.

Terms and refunds

How do I pay, and is it safe?

Payments are handled by Stripe. Your card details are typed into Stripe's page and go straight to Stripe; we never see or store your card number.

Can I switch between Monthly and Yearly?

Yes, from the pricing page while you are logged in. The difference is charged to your card that day, less the unused part of the plan you are leaving.

What happens to my saved documents if my plan ends?

They stay in your account. You can still open and delete them, but saving new versions needs an active plan.

Templates

What are the templates?

29 ready-made documents, such as an invoice, a receipt, a timesheet and a rental application, laid out with boxes to type into. Choose one and it opens in the editor, empty. Filling it in needs no account; downloading the finished PDF needs a plan.

See all templates

Do the totals add up by themselves?

No. The boxes for sums are for you to type into; the forms do not calculate, so check your figures.

Can I change the wording or add my logo?

Yes. Click any wording on a template to change it, and add a logo with the Image tool or keep one saved with your signature.

Are the application forms legal documents?

They are general-purpose forms, not legal advice. Rules on what you may ask an applicant differ from place to place, so check the ones that apply to you.

Help

How do I get help?

Write to support@pdfowl.net, or use Contact us in your account menu when you are logged in. Writing from the email address on your account helps us find it.

Can I make the site easier to read?

Yes. Accessibility, at the foot of every page, lets you choose larger text, stronger contrast, underlined links, easier reading and no animations. There is also a dark mode switch at the top of each page.
